Abstract

In many senior high English classes, students often participate very little and lack confidence, especially when speaking. Many students start class feeling emotionally unprepared, which leads to anxiety, hesitation, and a reluctance to use English. These issues limit engagement and make language learning less effective. Creating a supportive and lively classroom environment is important for helping students feel ready and willing to take part. This study examines how icebreakers and warm-up activities can increase student participation and confidence in English classes. The research was done in two cycles with a group of senior high students, using classroom action research. Data was collected through classroom observations, participation checklists, and teacher journals. The activities included short interactive games, simple speaking prompts, and group tasks to foster a relaxed, supportive atmosphere. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used to compare student participation and engagement before and after these activities. The results show that using icebreakers and warm-up activities helped students participate more, feel more confident, and be more willing to speak English. These strategies seem to support students’ emotional readiness and make English classes more interactive.
