Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer an unfamiliar phenomenon in contemporary society, including within the field of English Language Teaching (ELT). The integration of AI into ELT has generated diverse perceptions, particularly among educators and university students. This study aims to investigate the benefits, challenges, and implications of AI utilization in ELT, specifically in facilitating initial brainstorming activities at the higher education. Students and Lecturers from English Education Study Program at STKIP Agama Hindu Amlapura were involved in this study. Employing a qualitative descriptive research design, data were collected through interviews and questionnaire involving lecturers and students in higher education institutions. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns and emerging themes related to the benefits, challenges, and pedagogical implications of AI-Assisted Brainstorming. The findings indicate that AI supports idea generation and increases student engagement during initial brainstorming activities. However, concerns regarding overreliance, academic integrity, and limited institutional guidelines were also identified as significant challenges. It can be concluded that AI can become an effective pedagogical support tool in ELT integrated with clear ethical guidelines and structured instructional strategies, ensuring that AI will gives support rather than replaces students’ critical thinking.
