Abstract

Introduction — Scientific discovery is undergoing a profound transformation driven by the emergence of foundation models capable of learning generalized representations across diverse scientific domains. Unlike conventional artificial intelligence systems developed for narrowly defined tasks, foundation models provide adaptable computational architectures that increasingly support hypothesis generation, molecular design, biomedical knowledge synthesis, multimodal data interpretation, and scientific reasoning. These developments are reshaping the methodologies through which researchers investigate complex biological, medical, and forensic problems.

Perspective — This editorial discusses how foundation models are redefining research practices across bioinformatics, computational drug discovery, digital forensics, health informatics, and artificial intelligence. Rather than considering these models merely as tools for automation, we argue that they constitute a new scientific infrastructure capable of accelerating discovery while simultaneously introducing challenges related to reproducibility, explainability, transparency, and research integrity. The editorial further highlights the continuing importance of rigorous methodology, expert peer review, and responsible AI governance in ensuring trustworthy scientific progress.

Conclusion — The Foundation Model Era represents not only a technological transition but also a paradigm shift in scientific discovery. As interdisciplinary computational research continues to evolve, journals have an increasingly important role in promoting reproducible, explainable, and ethically responsible research. JBDFI aims to serve as an interdisciplinary platform supporting scientific innovation at the intersection of bioinformatics, digital forensics, artificial intelligence, and computational health sciences.
