Reading is vital in EFL learning, yet many students face low motivation, limited concentration, and anxiety. Traditional methods, which focus on comprehension questions and silent reading, may not promote a deep understanding. Recent pedagogy emphasizes deep learning, meaningful engagement, and critical interaction with texts.
This chapter explores the pedagogical potential of background music as a supportive strategy for creating an engaging reading environment that fosters deep learning in EFL classrooms. Its main argument is that background music can enhance students’ reading experiences by increasing focus, lowering anxiety, and encouraging deeper engagement with texts. Drawing on perspectives from language pedagogy, cognitive engagement, and the role of music in learning, the chapter presents practical classroom activities that integrate soft instrumental background music into reading instruction. Two teaching practices are discussed: background music-supported silent reading and storytelling-based reading performance. These activities aim to support students’ concentration, reduce reading anxiety, and encourage reflective and expressive engagement with texts. The discussion suggests that carefully selected background music can contribute to a more relaxed and focused learning environment, enabling students to engage more meaningfully with reading materials. This approach offers practical implications for EFL teachers seeking to design more engaging and emotionally supportive reading instruction that aligns with the principles of deep learning.
