Communities of Practice as a Framework for School Leadership Development: A Theoretical Exploration
Keywords:

The professional development of school leaders has become increasingly critical in addressing the complex challenges facing contemporary education systems. This conceptual article examines communities of practice (COPs) as a theoretical framework for enhancing school leadership development. Drawing on social learning theory and constructivist epistemology, this article explores the theoretical foundations, defining features, and conceptual frameworks that position COPs as effective professional development mechanisms for school principals. The article synthesizes literature on COP origins, core characteristics including recruitment methods, common purpose, interaction modes, and participant value, alongside conditions promoting COP success. By examining the theoretical underpinnings through an interpretivist paradigm, this article establishes that COPs offer a collaborative, context-responsive approach to leadership development that contrasts with traditional hierarchical training models. The conceptual framework presented integrates social learning theory with workplace integration principles, demonstrating how principals can enhance professional competencies through sustained interaction, knowledge sharing, and collective inquiry. Implications for educational policy and leadership development programs are discussed, with recommendations for theoretically grounded COP implementation in educational contexts.
