Abstract

Improvements in understanding teacher wellness and its importance in education have evolved recently. Specifically, with how it impacts teacher’s motivation and engagement and the quality of teaching. Professional Development (PD) opportunities have been known to enhance the pedagogical skills of teachers. The connection of PD opportunities and the well-being of teachers have been less explored, especially in the context of the English language teaching profession. Based upon a qualitative case study approach, this study intends to investigate the role of PD opportunities and teacher well-being of English language teachers. Data were collected through surveys completed by sixteen English teachers from elementary, junior and senior high schools in South Kalimantan, Indonesia, as well as through semi-structured interviews with five of the teachers. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke’s (2006) framework. The teachers in this study expressed that meaningful and relevant PD skills positively impacted their skills and motivational well-being, collegial relationships, and psychological health. This approach to teacher well-being must be included in the PD framework for English teachers to improve their psychological well-being.
